Is Hollywoodbets Legit and Legal in South Africa?
Short answer: yes for sports and horse racing betting. Hollywoodbets is a long-established South African bookmaker with provincial licences. The more useful answer is what that licence does and does not cover.
Licensing and background
- Origins. Hollywoodbets started in 1986 as a horse racing publishing business, Winning Form, and is headquartered in uMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.
- Licences. It operates under bookmaker licences issued by provincial gambling boards, including Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
- Physical presence. It runs retail branches across South Africa, so there is an office you can visit.
- Local sponsorships. It has sponsored major South African racing and sport, including the Durban July, Greyville and Scottsville racecourses and rugby and cricket teams.
Licence details change. Check the footer of the official Hollywoodbets website for the current licensing information.
What is legal
| Activity | Status in South Africa |
|---|---|
| Sports betting with a licensed bookmaker | Legal for adults 18+ |
| Horse racing betting with a licensed operator | Legal for adults 18+ |
| Online casino games | Not legal. The Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in October 2025 against casino-style games offered by sports betting licensees, and the National Gambling Board has said online casino gambling remains illegal until new legislation is passed. |
That is why this site covers sports and racing only. Be sceptical of any site, including a bookmaker's, that pushes online casino games to South African players.
What the licence means for you
- The operator must follow South African gambling law, including FICA checks and the 18+ limit.
- If a dispute cannot be resolved with the operator, you can complain to the provincial gambling board that licensed it.
- You are dealing with a local company with a South African address, not an anonymous offshore site.
How to tell a real Hollywoodbets site from a fake
- Type hollywoodbets.net or hollywoodbets.mobi yourself rather than following a link.
- Check that the address bar shows HTTPS and exactly the domain you expect.
- Be suspicious of any page asking for your password, OTP or voucher PIN by message.
- Remember that this site, za-hollywoodbets.com, is an independent guide and not the operator.
Common complaints
Most complaints about licensed bookmakers, Hollywoodbets included, concern slow withdrawals, FICA rejections and misunderstood bonus terms rather than non-payment. Almost all can be avoided by completing FICA early, reading promotion terms and using correct banking details. If a payout is already stuck, see delayed withdrawals.
Our view
For adults who want to bet on sport or horses, Hollywoodbets is a legitimate, locally licensed option. Treat betting as entertainment, set limits, and use the support tools if it stops being fun.
